It is a bad plan that admits of no modification

History - Where did we come from
Kiwanis International has been serving the
children of the World in more than 90
countries since 1915.
The first Kiwanis club was organized in
Detroit, Michigan. The first clubs were
organized to promote the exchange of
business among the members. However,
even before the Detroit club received its state
charter, the members were distributing
Christmas baskets to the poor. A lively
debate ensued between those who
supported community service as the Kiwanis
mission and those who supported the
exchange of business. By 1919, the service
advocates won the debate.
Kiwanis became international with the
organization of the Kiwanis club of Hamilton,
Ontario, Canada, in 1916. Kiwanis limited its
membership to the United States and
Canada until 1962, when worldwide
expansion occurred.
About Us >
Rockport Lakewood Kiwanis
"My grandfather once told me
that there were two kinds of
people: those who do the work
and those that take the credit.
He told me to try to be in the
first group; there was less
competition there."
Indira Gandhi
What are we?
The Rockport-Lakewood Club started in 2004 with the intention of keeping as many
of the older Kiwanis traditions as possible. By 2007 we realized that the old model
would not work with today's new generation.
We have simplified the club down to 2 simple concepts.
1. People need social outlets to get out as friends and as a couple.
2. People need to participate in service projects to make an impact on their
community.
To accommodate this generations busy life we decided to drop the number of
meetings to only two social dinner dates a month, on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday.
We constantly change our location to keep it exciting. The goal for the first year of
this new schedule is to visit the top 26 restaurants in Lakewood.
We have one family friendly service project per month. We want parents to be able
to model community involvement not only to their kids, but with them as well.
While we are geared towards singles and couples, we found that many members
were not bringing their spouses to our club meetings. We found out that if we
dropped the business meetings, the committees, the speakers and went to just 2
socials a month that the members would be much more likely to bring their
significant other.
It is hard to make new friends and make time to schedule your own service
projects, so we have made our club a friendly environment for both.
We are very excited about our growth and about the potential we have, please
check out our CALENDAR and plan on making it to one of our dinners!
We look forward to meeting you!
